The car camshaft and the cam are integral. The position and shape of the cam determine the opening and closing time of the valve and the height of the valve opening, so its accuracy is very important. In addition to a dedicated cam that drives the petrol pump, the camshaft has a pinion for driving the oil pump and distributor.

The work of the car camshaft must ensure that the cylinders are inflated and exhausted in an accurate time. Each cylinder of the four-stroke engine has an intake stroke and an exhaust stroke each time within two weeks of crankshaft rotation. Therefore, the speed of the camshaft must be half of the crankshaft speed.

The position of car camshaft is generally divided into upper, middle and lower three, and is also divided into single, double, top and other quantities.

Car camshaft inspection

(1) Bending inspection: Install the camshaft between the two thimbles of the lathe or support the journals at both ends with a “V” shaped horn, place it on the flat plate, touch the dial indicator to the middle journal, turn the camshaft, and swing the hands. Half of the difference between the maximum value and the minimum value is the straightness deviation. When the value is greater than 0.05mm, it should be cold pressed and straightened.

(2) Journal inspection: The roundness and cylindricity of each journal are measured with an outer diameter centimeter card. When the deviation of roundness and cylindricity is greater than 0.015mm, the size is repaired by grinding method. The difference of each step is -0.10mm, and it can be processed to -1.0mm.

(3) Cam inspection: Check with the sample plate or outer diameter by centimeter card. When the cam height is 0.4mm lower than the standard height, the cam should be ground. When the height is 1.0mm, it is repaired by surfacing. The cam is grooved or spotted to be repaired with oilstone. When the cam height of the Santana sedan is lower than 17.20mm, the camshaft should be replaced.
